Need for Faculty with Disabilities

There are almost no instructors with visible disabilities at the University of Victoria, and many who have invisible disabilities are reluctant to identify as disabled. To feel truly welcomed an included in Academe, students must see faculty who are like them. Without disabled faculty an important aspect of diversity is missing and the academic environment is incomplete.

Education/Awareness

Disabled people consistently report that their most difficult challenges are not their impairments but the attitudes of other people to those impairments. Prejudiced and discriminatory attitudes towards disabled people (and other minorities) are not inevitable. These negative attitudes are learned and they can be changed. Access UVic! is dedicated to reducing prejudice and discrimination through education. We offer an introduction to our work entitled "We're not broken you don't have to fix us".
