 Issues for Students with Disabilities

On Campus Housing

Students with disabilities sometimes find that on campus housing is less available to them than to their non-disabled peers. Students with certain disabilities require round-the-clock attendant care. Such care must be available upon request in student residences. A student with a live in aide forms a non-typical family, and should be accommodated in Family Housing.

Curriculum Content

We believe that all university students should be taught the history of disabled peoples, the different conceptual models of disability (the medical and social model), the principles of accessibility and the basic equality rights of people with disabilities. People with disabilities wish to see themselves represented respectfully in textbooks and course materials. Curriculum in the field of bio-ethics is an area of particular concern. Many disability organizations are critical of the views of the new professional bio ethicists being produced by universities.
