Issues for Students with Disabilities

S - HUT
Beginning
in September 2004 students with disabilities at the University of Victoria wrote
their exams in a substandard building on the far edge of the campus. Access
believed their had to be a better solution. We are thrilled to share that the
University finally demolished the building in September 2010. Access invites
everyone to celebrate the end of poor unheated, uncomfortable, unloved S-HUT.
Good-bye S-HUT.
Access would still like to see the accommodation needs of students with disabilities integrated into the central planning for exams for all students. We believe that everyone benefits when the needs of disabled students are met as much as possible within the regular system. There has to be a better solution than
separate, parallel exam systems. Access is dedicated to finding that solution.
Autonomy
Typically, self-governing disability advocacy groups have emerged from larger groups that included non-disabled supporters. Lack of understanding combined with deeply ingrained attitudes of pity or fear have sometimes resulted in patronising attitudes, or opposition to the goals and aspirations of disabled people themselves. To ensure that disabled people represent themselves and make their own decisions Access UVic! values political and financial autonomy.
